Town of Dummerston

Windham County, Vermont

Board of Civil Authority

The Board of Civil Authority is comprised of our Town Clerk, the five members of the Selectboard, and the seven Justices of the Peace. This board is tasked with assisting in the running of elections, acting as the statutory quasi-judicial board for grievances between taxpayers and listers, and maintaining the voter checklist.

The Town Clerk is the Presiding Officer for elections held in our town. The members of the Board of Civil Authority assist in assuring the smooth running of elections, and also assist with the counting of ballots. At least one member of the Board of Civil Authority is present throughout the day at the polling place.

When a taxpayer has a grievance with the decision of the Board of Listers, the taxpayer can appeal to the Board of Civil Authority. The Board acts as a quasi-judicial board hears evidence from all parties involved, and renders a decision. See the Fiile Cabinet page to download more information on property tax assessment appeals.
